Old home automation VS. The new home automation

Whenever we talk to anyone or anyone else about what we do, the same question comes up: ‘the new…home automation?’ This concept that lives and breathes in Kimbo Smart is likely to be unrecognisable at first glance. That’s why today we bring you the pugilistic fight of the millennium. And no, it’s not Tyson’s comeback. Today, the new and the old domotics face off. The show is guaranteed to be a spectacle.

What are old and new home automation?

First of all, it is necessary to explain what we mean by old home automation and new home automation. The former is the one that has historically been installed in homes with a wired system. On the other hand, the new home automation is based on wireless systems for its installation. Having made the introductions, let’s start!

Installation

The old domotics, due to its typology, requires a building work for its installation. All the connections that link the different devices in a house can be very far apart from each other and the cable has to connect them. This translates into ‘another building site’. The terror of many becomes reality when they realise that they have to open up walls again to have home automation, with the consequent economic, but above all emotional, expense. Nobody is happy about having to carry out building work…

The new home automation system, on the other hand, boasts technology with its radio frequency system. Not only does this system not require a pick and shovel, but it can be extended as and when required. The new home automation adapts without complications and with more coherent prices.

If opening walls was traumatic once, what happens if you want to upgrade or expand the system? The new home automation lets you do it in less than a day and without building work, while the old one puts the tools back in your house.

Security

In terms of security, the old home automation would in principle be somewhat superior to the new one, but specifically with the Z-WAVE system (professional protocol used in the new home automation), a level of security used by banks and public administrations is proposed.

Voice assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google Home, etc.)

With regard to integration with voice assistants, both home automation systems are compatible. Although it is true that the new home automation boasts a new technology and therefore works with protocols that allow complete integrations without delay with each ‘new assistant that appears’. The old home automation, although it manages to do so, takes longer to achieve these integrations.

Quality

It is important to mention that within the new home automation there are several levels of quality, and we are often asked about the role played by Wi-Fi, but it is an element that we directly discard if we are talking about a professionally domotised house. Wifi has a very high consumption, a medium level of security, and its reliability is very low as it uses the network. Moreover, the connection of several devices is detrimental to its use, as the greater the number of connections, the more likely it is to saturate the network. A battle between old home automation and new home automation can therefore only be fought with the Z-WAVE protocol as a bridge to the new home automation.

The new home automation is here to stay

At this point in the new home automation vs. old home automation battle, all that remains to be said is that the old home automation is still around, and of course, it is still and will continue to be used, but the new home automation is here to stay. Its versatility, its price and its integration with new technologies have made it go from being a great unknown to becoming the home automation of all.
